Description

Being agile in the development of software-intensive systems is imperative if we are to meet the dynamic challenges facing today's business environments. Agile software and systems engineering (SSE) is an approach that enables product teams to meet the many challenges faced by large, complex, software-intensive systems. Agile SSE embraces change by providing a framework that manages requirements volatility, provides shortened iterative development cycles, and provides frequent demonstrations of highest priority items.

This workshop provides a scenario approach as the participants walk through the phases of agile planning, estimating, and reporting. The participants play an active role in discussing team formation and agile engineering practices beginning with the receipt of customer needs and a few high-level capabilities through an iteration retrospective.  The Agile SSE framework is based on Scrum, Extreme programming practices, and systems engineering best practices.

Participants work in small teams to role play a cross functional team with a given set of capabilities that need to be planned and estimated for the next release. Using given techniques the teams decide what should be planned and what can they commit to using simple metrics to support their analysis. Through demonstration, the teams determine how they will track and communicate their progress to the customer and management teams.

Specific agenda topics include:

  • Defining an Agile Environment
  • Creating the Team
  • The role of the Systems Engineer
  • High-Level Agile Phases
  • Capabilities and Release Planning
  • Iteration Planning, Execution, and Review
  • Delivery of Value
  • Challenges with Transition and Large-Scale Programs
