Dennis Sawyer is Director, Aviation Systems Engineering in the Center for Advanced Aviation Solutions Development (CAASD) at The MITRE Corporation. CAASD is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration.  In this role, Mr. Sawyer leads MITRE’s enterprise systems engineering, communications engineering, economic and performance analysis, aviation security, cyber security, and aviation data services activities. 

Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Sawyer served as Executive Director, Veterans Affiars (VA) in MITRE’s Center for Enterprise Modernization.  He led MITRE’s work on the DoD/VA Integrated Electronic Health Record and VA modernization efforts. 

While serving as a Director in the Department of Defense (DoD) Center for National Security FFRDC, Mr. Sawyer led MITRE’s support to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (ASD-NII), DoD Chief Information Officer and DoD Deputy Chief Management Officer.  He was a strategic advisor to DoD leadership on IT strategy and governance, IT acquisition reform, and DoD-wide IT consolidation activities.

Prior to joining the MITRE Corporation, Mr. Sawyer was Director, Aviation Solutions for TRW, Inc.  Responsibilities included management of TRW’s Galaxy Air Traffic Control System product line, airport systems integration and consulting services (command center development, information security consulting, blast damage effects modelling, passenger baggage flow simulation, and airport physical security installations), and TRW’s systems engineering services support to the Federal Aviation Administration. 

Mr. Sawyer holds a B.S. in Resources Management from the United States Naval Academy and a M.S. in Information Technology Management from the Kogod School of Business at The American University.  He is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma national business school honor society and is a service-disabled veteran.
