An ESM Primer

Assured Mission Management comprises ESM and Courses of Action for DoD.  Similar constructs exist in the private sector when enterprises make security one of their strategic business goals.

The core elements of Enterprise Security Management are: Identity Management, Attribute Management, Credential Management, Digital Policy Management, Privilege Management, Configuration Management, Key Management, Audit Management, Metadata Management.

The essential functions of Enterprise Security Management are: Authenticate People and Things, Apply Metadata, Control Access to Information Resources, Mediate Information Flow Across Domains, Protect Identity, Protect Infrastructure, Protect Data in Transit, Protect Data at Rest and In Motion, Detection and Monitor, Analyze and Respond.

What if the security of your enterprise was flexible, dynamic, federated, assured and transparent?  Would you sleep better at night?

In the future security will be a core enterprise competency.  It will not simply be wrapped around an information infrastructure, but baked into the core of its management policies, information systems, processes and technologies.

Industry and government must seek better approaches to enterprise-wide security, and develop and promote standard security practices to which the public and private sectors can subscribe.

The new Enterprise Security Management (ESM) concept for DoD embodies these ideas.

ESM is the core capability to assure DoD mission success in the future.
