Introduction to the ISO 10303-233 Systems Engineering and -239 Product Life Cycle Support (PLCS) Data Standards

These international standards represent product data models across the life cycle from systems engineering through operations and support.

PLCS is mandated enterprise-wide by NATO and the US Air Force, and on specific programs by the Army, Navy, and Marines.  The Systems Engineering standard is emerging and aligned with related standards such as SysML and DoDAF.

These ISO standards are enterprise-class in the sense that they contain not only product engineering  models, but also how this data is related to risk, program/project, schedule, support system, and model data management information.  Their scope includes the following and their intra- and inter-relationships:

  • requirements and behaviors,
  • functional/physical/zonal breakdown structures,
  • interfaces,
  • documents, versions, views, and contexts,
  • locations and observations,
  • schedules and activities,
  • contracts and projects,
  • multiple identifiers/properties/classifications, person or organization,
  • skills, effectivity, etc.

The broad scope of the data models can be constrained to specific subsets and tailored or extended for a specific exchange.   The data models can also consolidate information into configuration managed repositories and manage engineering changes.    The standards also serve as the basis for web services with varying levels of granularity.

Seminar Outline

  • Relationship to other ISO 10303 (STEP) standardsScope of the information models

Seminar Attendees

The seminar is intended for Government and Business executives, managers and IT leaders that need to understand what impact these data standards and associated technologies will have on enterprises.    The seminar is tailored to be useful to personnel in program management, systems engineering, manufacturing, logistics, enterprise architecture, IT, configuration management, and related functions.   The seminar will give an overview of the technologies used and their benefits, such as XML schema generation and specialization using semantic technology, but will not get into the technical details of development and implementation, which will be addressed in follow-on training.    Attendees will leave with an understanding of what the standards are, how they can be implemented, and why, when, and where they should be used.
